    The state has the Roanoke Island colony, this colony was the first attempt by the English to establish there presence in the Americas. North Carolina has all types of terrains which range from an elevation from sea level on the coast to almost 6,700 feet (2,042 m) in the mountains.
    Due to the wide range of terrains the climate also ranges widely from the coastal Tidewater and Piedmont to the western mountains. Due to the largest shore line by any state in America, it has humid subtropical zone weather throughout the state. More than 300 miles (i.e. 500 km) from the coast, the western, mountainous part of the state also has a humid continental climate. North Carolina has the largest population of American Indians of any state east of the Mississippi.
